IDIS organized a visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, 26 January 2012. The administrations and students of IDIS were warmly received by Dr. Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Director-General, Department of International Organizations. Dr. Isarabhakdi, himself, was kind enough to give the group a briefing on human rights issues. As an insider of Thailand's human rights commitments and pledges, Dr. Isarabhakdi imparted valuable knowledge on the issue to the group, among others, namely:
1. Thailand was among the first 48 countries to vote in favor of the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. 2. Thailand is currently in party to seven out of nine core UN human rights treaties. Thailand is also party to Optional Protocol to CEDAW. 3. Thailand is a member of the Human Rights Council (HRC) during 2010-2013. In addition, Thailand Ambassador Sihasak Phuangketkeow was also elected Chair of the HRC during June 2010-June 2011. 4. At regional level, Thailand took active part in development of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights.
IDIS students obtained valuable views on their questions asked to Mr. Director-General. IDIS students found the session beneficial to their study and enjoyed the visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. |

Twelfth IDIS Forum was organized by IDIS, RSU, on Monday, 30th January 2012 at Sathorn Thani Study Center. Mr. David Steel, World Bank consultant and Principal Author of the first World Bank for Results Report, Former World Bank Executive, was the distinguished speaker for the said forum. Mr. David Steel delivered his insights on the issue entitled "How to keep Development Assistance Effective in the New Global Economy to the audience of the Forum. Mr. Steel drew upon his 38 years experience working as World Bank official in shedding lights on how to keep development assistance effective and relevant in rapidly changing world politically and economically. He indicated that, in the attempt to increase effectiveness of development assistance, development assistance partners adopted Paris Declaration in 2005. He elaborated that there are five principles contained in the Declaration, namely: Ownership, Alignment, Harmonization, Managing for Results, and Mutual Accountability. He pointed out a review taken in 2011 on the implementation of the Declaration revealed that only the Harmonization has made considerable progress. Mr. Steel also shared his view on the future role of World Bank and other donors. The Forum provided an informal environment where speakers and participants mingled and networked over the session.
